The Kentucky General Assembly met last week to address the devastating floods that swept over Eastern Kentucky. The special legislative session approved $212.7 million in new spending to help rebuild communities that were hit by floods in late July. Gov. Andy Beshear has worked with legislative leaders to best address the needs of Eastern Kentucky. Beshear said, “when it comes to helping Kentuckians during their time of need, our work isn’t bipartisan, it’s nonpartisan.” Beshear said. “To the people of Eastern Kentucky, today we are once again showing you that we are with you and we’re going to be with you as long as it takes to rebuild.” It’s within the purview of our government to repair infrastructure and ameliorate needs in times of disaster. And it’s refreshing when partisan rancor is put on the back burner to address pressing needs.
