The Federal Commission on School Safety met in Lexington last week and took questions from the public about keeping our kids safe in the public schools. U.S. Education Secretary Betsy DeVos and Gov. Matt Bevin participated in the event where he called school violence a "national epidemic." He made the link between the high numbers of kids who are on psychotropic drugs and also play violent video games. Such connections have been criticized but it’s important that we begin to connect the dots that explain the increase in school shootings. Kentucky Education Commissioner Wayne Lewis called for more school resource officers to build better relationships with the students. It was a good conversation, one that goes much deeper than simply banning certain types of guns. And hopefully it will result in new policies that actually make our schools safer.
