Local newspapers were once seen as a trustworthy and necessary institution to the flourishing of the community. But as the printing of newspapers in general has declined, and citizens have begun to distrust the media and look to national media more broadly, local newspapers have gone the way of the dinosaur. This is unfortunate, as local media should be engaged by Christians and seen as a ministry opportunity. With the local newspaper, light can be shone upon wrongdoings in the community, the good deeds of our fellow citizens can be highlighted, the physical needs of community members can be known, and voters can be informed of the positions of political candidates. And as we do so, the truth of God’s Word can be heralded throughout the city and call its citizens to love our neighbors.
