Does 2 + 2 = 4? According to the Ontario Mathematics Coordinators Association (OMCA), no, it doesn’t. This is part of an initiative in education that believes traditional math is rooted in Eurocentrism and white supremacy. Dr. Laurie Rubel, an associate professor of mathematics education, sums it up well, “it’s about truth: who holds the truth, who decides what is true, and how open we are as a society to multiple truths.” But is math a fixed truth or a subjective truth? And if it is subjective, would we really want these kids to become engineers where math is important? Some might believe that mathematical propositions are made up but denying them won’t be because mathematical propositions are true regardless of your ethnicity.
