The Biden Administration’s Drug Enforcement Agency has decided to reclassify marijuana as a safer drug. Formerly pot was classified as a Schedule I drug (like heroin). The DEA is now classifying marijuana will a Schedule III drug (like regulated steroids). Some interpret this as the federal government caving into states that have legalized and legitimized marijuana. The DEA’s declassification of pot is the latest sign of a major social shift from rejecting recreational drug use to legitimizing it. Many agree that the war on drugs has failed by simply penalizing drug users. But there’s a grave danger to normalizing recreational drugs that not only harm people but also damage and tax our ever fraying social fabric.
