Gov. Andy Beshear signed a bill declaring that churches are essential entities in times of emergency. Ironically this bill came about because churches were considered nonessential during his Covid shutdowns. While Walmart, liquor stores, and casinos were declared essential, churches were not. The bill was a victory for religious liberty. It was also a victory for other religious organizations in that they are protected from discrimination by the state government. This means that groups like Sunrise Children’s services cannot be discriminated against like Gov. Beshear did in 2021. It also provided a cause of action for religious organizations that have been harmed by discriminatory actions by the state government. It took some doing by the state legislature, but we’re glad Gov. Beshear agrees that churches are essential.
