Last week the Beshear Administration refused to renew the contract with Sunrise Children’s Service. This faith based ministry works with all children, but its faith convictions determine what kind of homes they’ll place children in. And there’s the rub. Gov. Beshear wants Sunrise to place children in same-sex parented homes. But that would violate Sunrise’s religious convictions. Previous governors have accommodated the religious beliefs of Sunrise, but not Gov. Beshear. The Louisville Courier-Journal went so far as to run a misleading headline that said “Baptist group refuses Kentucky state contract to provide care for abused, neglected kids” But this is far from the truth. It’s Gov. Beshear who refuses to allow Sunrise to fulfill its mission. And unfortunately Kentucky’s abused and neglected children will be hurt.
