After a church in Lexington closed its doors because of an abuse scandal, a columnist for the Lexington Herald-Leader said that it is hypocrisy for Christians to criticize drag shows when abuse happens within the church. Abuse by spiritual leaders is heinous, and scandals like this one have led churches across Kentucky to take new steps to protect the vulnerable. But does the hypocrisy of some churches nullify the moral witness of all churches? Drag shows elevate moral license over moral boundaries, and self-expression over the protection of children. That’s the opposite of the mission of a biblically-faithful church. And that’s where the journalist’s comparisons misses the mark and efforts by the General Assembly to protect children from drag shows are so important.
