The state of California is taking the lead in protecting public school children from harmful devices. Recently, Gov. Gavin Newsom signed a bill into law that requires school districts to implement restrictions on smartphone use while at school. California teachers pushed for the measure because smartphones have led to out of control classrooms with distracted students not engaged in their studies. It’s an irony that the state where the smartphone was invented is now preventing children from using them in public schools. California should be commended for leading in this area, and other states—including Kentucky—should follow. One middle school principal said that the ban has “totally changed the culture” of his school. And its long overdue for the culture to change in public school classrooms.
