California Governor Gavin Newsom suspended a $54 million contract with Walgreens after they announced they would not send abortion drugs through the mail to states that prohibit this. Kentucky has a similar law. Newsom said that he won’t do business with corporations that “cave to extremists” and cut off what he calls “critical access to reproductive care and freedom.” It’s curious that Newsom maligns Walgreens as “caving to extremists.” After all, Walgreens is abiding by the laws of other states. We are a nation of laws, where businesses must abide by duly enacted legislation. California might not agree with such laws, but they must abide by them. And this means that Governor Newsom should stop bullying businesses for doing the right thing, even when he’s ideologically opposed to the law.
