Momentum for Educational Opportunity in Kentucky
Donald Trump’s momentum for President will likely carry Kentucky’s Amendment 2 ballot initiative across the finish line. His polling in Kentucky against recent dropout President Biden ballooned to predict a 31-point victory in November. There is little to suggest that Vice President Harris’s liberal policies and inability to connect with moderate Democrats—as witnessed in the 2020 Democrat Presidential Primary—will change this sentiment.
GOP Platform Distances from Social Conservatism
Republicans finalized their platform for 2024 without two key planks. For decades, the GOP prioritized a federal abortion ban. They also praised traditional marriage between one man and one woman as a foundation of a flourishing society. This year, the party convention removed all references to federal action on abortion. The only reference to abortion says, “We will oppose Late Term Abortion, while supporting mothers and policies that advance Prenatal Care, access to Birth Control, and IVF (fertility treatments).” The only reference to marriage nixes endorsement of traditional man/woman marriage.
A Christian Approach to Politics
I’ve given several talks lately on a Christian approach to politics. If you’ve read any of my writings or heard me speak, you know that I view current events and politics through the grid of the Bible, which teaches that there’s a great spiritual battle behind the headlines. This idea may be foreign to many in our increasingly secular society, but how do you account for the reality of evil which rears its ugly head on a daily basis? How do you account for good and an otherworldly response to such evil?
The Logic Is Clear: Doctors Should Save Mothers’ Lives
The exception to abortion bans which allows doctors to save mothers’ lives took center stage during the first presidential debate. The most striking statement about it was not during the argument, however. It was the subject of a TV advertisement from the Biden campaign which aired during a break. The commercial featured a Louisiana woman who says that doctors refused to provide her care after her miscarriage because of the state’s abortion ban. But is it true?
Why Educational Opportunity Protects Children & Teachers from Federal Overreach
On April 19, 2024, The Biden Administration issued an executive order which unveiled new Title IX regulations in an effort to change the original, noble intent of protecting girls from sex-based discrimination. The 1972 amendment declared: “No person in the United States shall, on the basis of sex, be excluded from participation in, be denied the benefits of, or be subjected to discrimination under any education program or activity receiving Federal financial assistance.”
A Certificate to Compete?
A major issue in Kentucky’s 2024 legislative primaries is one that many outside of Northern Kentucky may not know about: certificate of need (CON) reform. CON laws were formulated in the 1950’s with good intentions: to keep healthcare costs down. The theory was that a large number of unused medical resources would drive costs up. Currently, medical providers are not allowed to construct or modify their facilities without a permission slip from the government confirming that they meet a market need. Unfortunately, data soon showed that rationale to be inaccurate, and states began repealing or reforming their CON laws.

Beshear’s approval rating of 63 percent remains among the highest in the nation. But he has yet to defend his policy positions to the voters. The strong challenge by Daniel Cameron will likely draw down the reservoir of goodwill toward Beshear. Whether he has enough to buoy him to another four year term will be decided on November 7.

A Conflict of Commitments: When Theology Meets U.K. Basketball
Two weeks ago, CPC’s daily radio program The Commonwealth Minute featured a story on Mark Pope, the new Men’s Basketball Coach at the University of Kentucky. Our commentary was intended to be a positive reflection on the moral framework Pope will bring to the program. As a player and coach at other universities, and in recent days as he has begun his new role, Pope has demonstrated a strong and selfless character. The Minute was intended to highlight those achievements and express optimism about the future of Kentucky Basketball, one of the most prominent institutions in our commonwealth.
Red Heifers, Conspiracies, and Hope for Middle East Peace
Hamas’ terroristic assault on Israel appears to have been triggered by more than deep hatred for the Jewish state. Many believe that Israel is plotting to destroy the Al-Aqsa Mosque and rebuild the Jewish temple in its place. According to a recent story from CBS News, a group of evangelical Christians and orthodox Jews have cooperated to import red Angus heifers from Texas into the Jewish state. Their motivations are theological: they believe that Biblical prophecy foretells the arrival of these heifers as the first presage of the rebuilding of the Jewish temple, and inaugurates the Second Coming of Christ.
