Asbury University, a conservative Christian college near Lexington, is under fire from news media outlets because it fired two LGBT-affirming professors. The political cartoon in the Lexington Herald-Leader had a rainbow leading to Asbury and it said: The end of the rainbow at Asbury University. Keep in mind, that Asbury is a private Christian school funded by private dollars. Asbury also affirms biblical standards of sexual morality. Their moniker is “academic excellence and spiritual vitality.” But in today’s cultural climate such beliefs—even at private religious schools, are met with disdain. As a society, we scoff at moral boundaries and are surprised at personal emptiness, sexual scandal, and abuse. Asbury has moral expectations of its professors for a reason and good journalists should explore those reasons instead of ridiculing.
