Most of us agree that there’s a breakdown in civility these days. That’s because too often we major in bold opinions and minor in being considerate and careful when speaking with others— even to those in our own families. Looking out for the best interest of another is necessary for healthy relationships and a healthy society. The standard is even higher for Christians, who are told to love their neighbors as themselves. And sometimes your neighbors might not be very nice people. So, if you’re struggling with tempering your comments, ask yourself: why? Ask what’s influencing you? And who do you seek for guidance? If it’s Jesus, then act like him. If we begin doing that, I’m pretty sure we’ll see a return to civility and the healing that’s needed today.
