Who’s responsible for the political division in the U.S.? The answer isn’t what you think it might be. According to a recent study by the Associated Press, almost three-quarters of Americans believe that the news media is responsible for increasing political division. The study suggests that the news media’s spread of misinformation is a major factor in this division, with one-third of Americans saying that they see misleading headlines on a daily basis. It’s difficult to imagine a cohesive society where journalist’s commitment to political narratives drowns out objective reporting. Fair journalism is integral to healthy politics. So if the political rift is to be bridged, journalists must resist their preconceived political narratives and recommit to telling the truth.
