Recent reports from the Wall Street Journal and other outlets have revealed Facebook’s use of algorithms to increase youth engagement. Yet, internal studies performed by Facebook have shown that with this increased engagement, there has been an increase in mental health issues, especially bullying, and self-harm. Facebook is not alone. TikTok and Instagram have also targeted youth in their algorithms. In response, the US Senate is conducting a hearing on “Protecting Kids Online.” Kentucky Attorney General Daniel Cameron has joined with other AGs to support this hearing. Cameron said, “In order to protect Kentucky’s youngest citizens, we must remain involved in conversations surrounding social media usage.” This is certainly a worthy endeavor. Children should be protected from things that harm them. Particularly when Big Tech puts profit over what’s best for our kids.
