Louisville eighth grader Daniel Mattingly was chosen to give the graduation speech for his class at Stuart middle school. After several revisions that didn’t meet the teachers’ standards Mattingly was told to “speak from his heart.” And speak he did. Mattingly lobbed a four-letter profanity and accused the school being “built on racism, sexism, and homophobia.” He told WAVE TV in Louisville that he faced the tragic loss of both parents to cancer when he was in fourth grade. His trauma deserves compassion, but unleashing grievances and accusations isn’t the way to deal with it. Mattingly’s graduation speech went viral, and received a lot of support. After being embarrassed, perhaps Stuart Middle School officials will teach civility and respect to their students.
