The U.S. Supreme Court has struck down Colorado’s ban on so-called “conversion therapy” or sexual orientation change efforts (SOCE) for minors. It ruled that the law violated the First Amendment rights of a counselor. Justice Neil Gorsuch said the state law was wrong to restrict what licensed therapists could say. He warned that government cannot “enforce orthodoxy in thought or speech.” This was an important decision that affirms First Amendment free speech rights for all and turns back government restriction on speech. This issue is tied to deeply held religious beliefs about identity, sexuality, and human dignity. The Court made clear that state’s like Colorado cannot compel or silence belief. Altogether, the ruling will impact 26 other states that ban “conversion therapy.”
