A jury in California ordered Meta and Google to pay millions in a landmark case over social media addiction. A young woman argued that early and prolonged use of platforms like Instagram and YouTube contributed to depression, anxiety, and body image issues. Jurors found the companies liable for negligent design and failure to warn users, awarding roughly $6 million in total damages, with Meta responsible for the majority. Another case out of New Mexico found Meta guilty of violating consumer protections law especially regarding minors. A jury awarded $375 million to families with children who were negatively affected by Meta’s various social media platforms. It’s becoming clear that social media has a dark side. One that we need to protect our children from.
