I moderated a candidate forum the other day where both candidates for the State House indicated they were Christians. However, during the debate, one of the candidates viciously slandered and attacked his opponent. This didn’t go well with the audience or with me. It’s one of the reasons why many avoid politics. But it doesn’t have to be this way, especially for Christians who are told to be kind and gracious to all people, even their enemies. Followers of Jesus are filled by the spirit and have fruits of the spirit in their lives: “love, joy, peace, patience, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control.” Paul goes on to say “against such things there is no law”. And for those who aspire to be lawmakers, there is no downside here, even in the middle of a hot debate.
