Last Monday, several Louisville coffee shops weren’t open for business as usual. That’s because employees at Sunergos Coffee and Starbucks recently unionized. They organized a one-day strike to protest low wages and working conditions. Both Starbucks and Sunergos failed to negotiate collective bargaining agreements with their workers. Baristas at Heine Brothers Coffee also recently formed a union, but they agreed to a contract earlier this year. We may not agree with union tactics, but we should agree that employees ought to treat every worker with dignity and fairness. The Bible condemns the exploitation of workers. And when employers respect the dignity and work of their employees, unions, and strikes will be unnecessary.
