UC Berkley was once known for protecting free speech and inclusion of different ethnic and religious groups on campus. But the latest actions by nine law student groups undermine this tradition. Groups like the Women of Berkeley Law, Middle Eastern and North African Law Students Association, and the Queer Caucus amended bylaws at the beginning of the school year to prohibit invitations to speakers that support Israel. In other words, these groups are refusing to allow any speakers who support Israel. The idea of America as a melting pot has been lost. Also lost is the American ideal of tolerance and freedom to exchange ideas. Antisemitic anywhere is unacceptable and it’s even more disappointing when it happens at the university level.
