Gov. Andy Beshear’s recent mask mandate for children as young as two years old was slapped down by two courts. A federal judge in Northern Kentucky said Beshear had no authority to tell Catholic schools in Covington what to do. Just days after that ruling, the Ky Supreme Court upheld a law that restricts Beshear’s emergency powers. He’s acted in defiance of the law for several months. Now Beshear is hinting that he may call for a special session. This is because Republican legislators will be in charge of crafting policy, including mask policy, to fight Covid. Republican leaders say they’ll cooperate with Beshear if he calls a session. Up until this point, Beshear hasn’t worked with Republicans who control both houses in the legislature. It took the court system to force Beshear to do so.
