Former President Trump hurled vulgar insults during a recent New Jersey rally. The address was laden with expletives and particularly targeted journalists. Journalists may lean far to the left these days, but as a group they’re vanguards of the First Amendment freedoms of speech and press. A question for all of us to ponder is: when did insults and vulgarity become normative in our politics? This is not healthy or normal behavior for anyone, and it’s utterly unbecoming of any candidate for elected office. Strong convictions and character should mark those who lead us. Hurling insults and vulgarities and broad brushing entire groups in politics undermines healthy society. It’s time for a reset of the moral order, a restoration of public civility, and our politics.
