Washington Governor Bob Ferguson recently signed a bill which demands that Catholic Priests violate their Confessional Seal concerning cases involving child abuse or neglect. Proponents say this law holds abusers accountable. However, opponents argue that state is overstepping its bounds. Catholic priests take an oath before God to not reveal sins confessed by parishioners. This law violates the that oath. The U.S. Justice Department seems to agree, as the Trump administration launched an inquiry into the law to “investigate the apparent conflict between Washington State’s new law with the free exercise of religion under the First Amendment. Child abuse is horrible and must be stopped. But violating constitutional protections, including freedom of religion, hurts everyone.
