An increasing number of parents are getting involved with what goes on in their kids’ classrooms. And some are going to court over controversial curriculum. After a group of Virginia parents learned that the local school district is using a so-called “anti-racist” curriculum, they sued. This curriculum teaches that racism is “the marginalization and/or oppression of people of color based on a socially constructed racial hierarchy that privileges white people.” Now parents are fighting back. They’re asserting that such teaching violates Virginia’s constitutional protections from discrimination based on race. Parents should know what’s going on in the schools and, in this case, are going the extra step to oppose any curriculum that contains racist, divisive, and guilt-inducing teaching.
