The University of Louisville is under investigation by the Department of Education’s Office for Civil Rights. The inquiry focuses on whether UofL’s scholarships unlawfully exclude students based on national origin. Notably, the Sagar Patagundi Scholarship, limited to undocumented students, may violate Title VI of the Civil Rights Act. Other scholarships under review include those targeting LGBTQ+ students of color and Latino students. The investigation follows complaints from the Legal Insurrection Foundation, which stresses equal opportunity for all students. Some argue that these scholarships provide opportunities for minority students to receive an education. But others raise a fundamental question: should scholarships reward skin color, sexual orientation, and national origin or the content of a one’s character? To this end, UofL has not yet commented.
