Americans’ trust in the mass news media has reached an all-time low. According to the latest Gallup survey, 7 in 10 adults say they don’t have “much confidence” (36%) or “none at all” (34%). Altogether only 8% of Republicans have confidence in mass news media. Confidence levels vary between party affiliation and age demographics. Contributing to the decline with Republicans is biased reporting that favors democratic candidates and politics. Consider that CBS News settled out of court with President Trump for editing Kamala Harris’s pre-election interview to make her look better. Republicans point to other examples of bias that’s led to a decline in confidence. If mainline news outlets hope to gain public confidence it must begin by reporting objectively and fairly.
