President Donald Trump warned on his Truth Social page last week that “a whole civilization will die tonight” unless “something revolutionarily wonderful” happens. This threat jarred the world. It’s clear that Iran is a hostile regime and the world’s major funder of terrorism. But threatening to annihilate an entire nation is a disproportional response. It’s also a violation of Just War principles. Just war theory reminds us that force must be proportional, discriminate, and that civilians shouldn’t be targets. Targeting an entire society fails these tests. Trump’s war with Iran has drawn criticism with former supporters, including Tucker Carlson, Megyn Kelly, Candace Owens and former Congresswoman Marjorie Taylor Greene, which indicate that conservative influencers have their limit with how far they’ll support the president.
