The state of Tennessee defended its law protecting minors from gender interventions in front of the U.S. Supreme Court last week. The ACLU has challenged the law, saying that it deprives minors of their right to determine their own gender identity. Interestingly, the ACLU attorney arguing against Tennessee’s law is transgender. It’s unclear how this might persuade the U.S. Supreme Court in their final ruling. One thing is clear: there’s a difference between minors who cannot consent to major life-changing decisions and adults who have the mental capacity to do so. The high court will render its judgement this spring. It’s expected to affect 25 other states—including Kentucky—which have legal protections to keep gender-dysphoric minors from harming themselves.
