Toronto apparently has a problem with car thieves. So in response, the Toronto Police Service recently told car owners to leave their keys near their front doors where they will be more accessible. This is their response to the rising number of carjackings and home invasions in the city. But is it the job of the police to tell its law-abiding citizens how to make it easier for criminals to commit crimes? Of course not. American communities have also embraced policies that coddle criminals in cities like Minneapolis, Washington D.C., and even Louisville. Some even tried to “defund the police.” But these policies are dismal failures. Police exist to protect individuals and their property and ensure public safety. Any government that fails to protect the public is failing in one of its most important responsibilities.
