The state of Tennessee is expanding school choice. It opened up applications for the state school voucher program open last week which makes available $7000 a year to 20,000 families, half of which are earmarked for low income families, students with disabilities, and those eligible for the education savings account program. Tennessee Governor Bill Lee referred to this voucher program as “life-changing.” This is the opposite of Kentucky which voted down school choice last year. Interestingly, Tennessee’s public schools won’t lose funding due to disenrollment of public school students. And public school teachers will get a $2,000 bonus as part of the program—two arguments Kentucky teachers raised to defeat the amendment last year.
