Louisiana recently passed a state law requiring that the Ten Commandments be posted in all public school classrooms, including universities. The rationale behind the law is that kids are growing up in a society without a moral compass. Many believe that the Ten Commandments is the place to start. Kentucky’s Attorney General Russell Coleman agrees and has written a brief supporting Louisiana’s law, which is being challenged in court. This is an old debate in Kentucky, where in 1978 the state legislature passed a similar law that required the posting of the Ten Commandments in public school classrooms. The U.S. Supreme Court eventually struck down the law. Louisiana’s law may wind up in front of the court again. But it remains to be seen how they will address it.
