I recently interviewed Kentucky US Senator Rand Paul, about his DOGE 1.0 amendment, which would statutorily codify cuts to federal spending recommended by President Donald Trump and his Department of Government Efficiency. Paul also introduced a bill eliminating the federal department of education. Senator Paul could be considered the first DOGE. When he was elected in 2010, he ran as a Tea Party candidate, touted balancing the federal budget, consistently opposed deficit spending, and has proposed to balance the budget. Revelations of ridiculous federal grants that have funded political activism and ideology, inefficiencies in the workplace, and potential fraud in government contracts show the need for a housecleaning. But if the cuts are to remain, it will take congressional action to codify government reform.
