There’s an important case before the U.S .Supreme Court regarding what constitutes a religious organization and whether they should receive constitutional protection. Back in 2016, a Catholic charities organization in Wisconsin applied for a waiver for the unemployment insurance. But the state said the wasn’t sufficiently religious in nature and fit the definition of a religious entity. This was because Catholic Charities was helping with material needs. The US Supreme Court justices seem skeptical. And here’s the important point. Religious organizations, whether they are providing material goods to those in need or simply proclaiming the gospel, are religious entities, and they should receive First amendment protections afforded by our constitution. The case is Catholic Charities Bureau, Inc. v. Wisconsin Labor Review Commission and a ruling should be handed down sometime this summer.
