The State Legislature reconvened last Tuesday in Frankfort and lawmakers have introduced important bills to protect religious freedom. One bill (SB 60) would allow individuals to sue the government for religious liberty violations. Another, bill (HB 37) would remove sales tax from church events where food is sold. And yet another bill (SB 59) would exempt churches and ministries from land use requirements in order to provide housing to those in need. Each of these measures if enacted will uphold religious freedom, a principle enshrined in both the U.S. and Kentucky Constitutions. Religious freedom protections are designed to restrain the government from infringing on the ability of churches and believers to freely live out their beliefs in the public square.
