The Summer Olympics opening ceremony in Paris featured a blasphemous parody resembling the Last Supper. Scantily-clad drag queens surrounded a pagan god. Sexual innuendo and risqué behavior caught many families off guard, leaving parents to shield their kids’ eyes. Many are scratching their heads and wondering how does a provocative transgender display fit in with the Olympics? It’s supposed to be a world class event of athletic excellence and competition—not a reordering of moral categories that offend our moral sensibilities. The irony is that while drag queens mocked Christianity on a world stage, they undermined the very religion which shaped Western Civilization and the modern Olympics itself. The appropriate response here is God have mercy on us. May we pray to that end.
