A new study from Pew Research found that the Nones are now the largest religious affiliation group in the country. These are people who identify as atheist, agnostic, or say their religion is “nothing in particular,” and they make up 28% of the U.S. population. The study also found that these people are the strongest and most consistent liberal Democrats in the country, which tells us something important: Our religion and beliefs shapes our politics. While politics is important, the battle over how we govern ourselves is spiritual in nature. This means the Church has a real opportunity, in fact a crucial role in shaping the politics of our society. If we want our culture to embrace ideals of truth, goodness, and beauty, then it must exalt Christ as Lord and source of this reality.
