Hundreds of Kentuckians joined “No Kings” rallies in Lexington, Louisville, and across the state, protesting President Donald Trump. The protests reflect frustration and criticism, but they also underscore a deeper truth about American government: in a free society, citizens are allowed to assemble and speak openly, even against powerful officials like the president. A tyrant or “king” would not permit such public dissent. Political opponents would be jailed. These demonstrations are a reminder that freedom of speech and peaceful protest are fundamental freedoms protected by our Constitution. Kentuckians’ ability to voice disagreement is actually a measure of the republic’s health. In this sense, these protests show that America does not have a tyrannical king, but is a government of, by, and for the people.
