Louisville has considered itself a sanctuary city—a safe-place for those who are in the country illegally. But that changed last week after the Trump administration threatened to cut millions in federal assistance. Mayor Craig Greenberg said the stakes are too high and agreed to comply with the Department of Justice’s enforcement of federal immigration law. Some fear for the illegal immigrants and others are angry at Greenberg for complying with federal law, but there’s a bigger question: do cities have the right to violate federal immigration law? While we’re a nation of immigrants, we’re also a nation that lives under the rule of law. And this applies to our our leaders and those who want to immigrate to the United States.
