A Laurel County grand jury indicted London Mayor Randall Weddle on four felony counts tied to $93,000 in illegal campaign contributions. Weddle made the contributions on his credit card but the limit for any one person to donate to a candidate is $2000 per election. Prosecutors say that Weddle made multiple contributions to Governor Andy Beshear’s campaign state Democratic party, but made the donations in the name of other people. This indicates Weddle—an elected official himself, knew that he was skirting the law. Campaign donation rules exist to promote transparency and conflicts of interest. This case makes clear that nobody is above the law. Mayor Weddle faces the possibility of 20 years in prison and a $40,000 fine.
