Lexington-Fayette Urban County Council voted to ban what is known as conversion therapy. The idea is that counselors and therapists are forcing minor children to leave their LGBT identity. But Dr. Julie Hamilton disagrees. She’s a licensed therapist who successfully overturned similar bans in Boca Raton and Palm Beach, Florida. She calls conversion therapy a politically loaded and unscientific term. Licensed therapists and counselors must abide by a code of ethics regarding treating their patients with respect and dignity. Patients who are struggling with psychological distress come to counselors for help. But Lexington’s ban now prevents minors from seeking help with conflicted feelings about their LGBT identity. In essence, the ban is a prohibition on free speech and prevents kids from getting help they need to overcome unwanted sexual identities.
