Last Thursday, California Democratic Senator Alex Padilla was forcefully removed from a Homeland Security news conference. Sen. Padilla disrupted the conference in objection to the ICE raids going on in his state and elsewhere in the country. Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem was guarded by Secret Service agents, who removed Padilla from the room, despite his resistance. Padilla continued to resist and was eventually taken to the ground and handcuffed. Some are outraged at this spectacle including Senate Democratic leader Chuck Schumer who described the scene as sickening to his stomach. While Padilla has a First Amendment right to freedom of speech, his right doesn’t including obstructing a press conference. Padilla of all people as an elected official, should know this.
