The disruption of a church service in Minnesota is leading state legislatures across the country to protect worship services, including in Kentucky. HB 540 establishes the crime of interference with a religious service as a class A misdemeanor. It also creates a new section in Kentucky law to establish a civil cause of action which means pastors or church members who’ve had their service interrupted can sue in court. The political left is arguing that protesting church services is simply a First Amendment freedom. But what about the First Amendment freedom of worship? Churches should never be treated as props for political theater. They’re houses of worship that a civil society should protect, which benefits all of us.
