Today Dr. Steven Stack begins as the secretary of the Kentucky Cabinet for Health and Family Services. It’s an important agency and Stack’s experience as a physician and commissioner for the Department for Public Health for the past several years puts him in a good position to lead. Stack points out the challenge of leading, especially as too many Kentuckians are in poor health. He’s concerned about proposed cuts to programs like Medicaid and SNAP. While these programs have been a safety net to poor Kentuckians, they are only part of the equation for good health. Each person must take ownership of their own lives and make healthy choices. In the end, the choice to exercise, eat well, and care for their bodies is outside the scope of any government policy.
