Secretary of States Michael Adams says that more and more Kentucky voters are registering as Independents. While it’s true that Republicans dominate most of rural Kentucky, Democrats are looking to catch up. At their annual convention in Owensboro, leaders of the Democratic party are emphasizing a renewed commitment to reaching rural voters. This is a hard sell as the last remaining rural democrat in the state senate Robin Webb, switched parties. But Adams warns that with Democrats going further left and Republicans moving further to the right, the middle will only grow stronger. Currently 11% of Kentucky voters are registered as neither a Republican nor Democrats—a reminder that Kentucky’s political future may be decided by those who register as independents.
