The troubled Jefferson County Public School district dealt with a bussing fiasco, low test scores, and dangerous classrooms last year. Now, there are fears that these issues may reappear. Some schools are without bus access as the semester begins, and there are over 650 job vacancies yet to be filled. But JCPS is spending time and resources trying to thwart Amendment 2, which empowers parents to make the best educational choice for their kids. It’s also the reason why the state legislature has considered state control of Kentucky’s largest school system. Last year, JCPS took students to political protests and was forced to close for several days because of bussing failures. This year, they ought to rethink their priorities and focus on teaching students.
