Protests erupted last week in Los Angeles over the deportation of illegal immigrants. Some turned violent as rioters burned cars, looted businesses, and effectively shut down part of the city. President Trump dispatched both the National Guard and the U.S. Marines to get bring back order. But some, like California Governor Gavin Newsom say the troops were really sent to further escalate the situation. California is now suing the Trump administration and seeking a restraining order on the federal deployment. However, others see President Trump’s actions as nothing more than a commitment to enforce the laws. The government has a duty to both protect constitutional freedoms, and at the same time protecting the private property, rights and safety of citizens, something Newsom failed to do.
