Geopolitical repositioning is a common theme in 2025. Now, rural voters in Illinois and Oregon are pushing the idea of seceding from their states. These voters feel unrepresented in their state governments as liberal voices in metro areas dominate state politics. These voters align more closely with residents of Indiana and Utah. And now legislatures are willing to discuss the possibility of welcoming them to join their states. State borders have changed over 50 times in U.S. history. However, it has been over 150 years since whole counties have shifted into other states. This last occurred when West Virginia separated from Virginia during the Civil War. Today’s realignment is a reminder of the polarized political climate and affinity that rural citizens have with conservative principles.
