In 1621, the pilgrims celebrated the first Thanksgiving and thanked God for bringing them through a hard winter where half of them died. In 1787, President Washington issued a proclamation thanking God for allowing Americans to “peaceably establish a form of government for their safety and happiness.” And in the midst of the civil war, President Lincoln asked “the Almighty Hand to heal the wounds of the nation and to restore it.” Many of our greatest leaders have publicly thanked God for His goodness and provision. In a time of selfishness and ingratitude, may we consider the many good gifts that God has given us. Let it begin around our dinner table today. May we reflect on our blessings and give thanks to God for what he’s done for us. And may each of you enjoy a wonderful Thanksgiving!
