In 1621, the pilgrims celebrated the first Thanksgiving and thanked God for bringing them through a hard winter, where half their number died. In 1787, President Washington issued a proclamation thanking God for allowing Americans to “peaceably establish a form of government for their safety and happiness.” And in the midst of the civil war, President Lincoln asked “the Almighty Hand to heal the wounds of the nation and to restore it.” Giving thanks to God is interwoven in our history. In a time when we don’t consider the sacrifice and hardships endured by those who’ve gone before us to create this great nation, may we reflect on our blessings and give thanks to our Creator God today. And may each of you enjoy a wonderful Thanksgiving!
